Which file format works best for ATS — PDF or DOCX?

PDF is the safer choice for most ATS in 2026. It preserves your exact formatting, is supported by every major ATS (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, iCIMS), and avoids Word's auto-fixes mangling your layout. DOCX is also supported and sometimes parses keywords slightly better in older ATS, but it can render differently across Word versions. Avoid: image-based PDFs (scans), .pages, .odt, anything below 30KB or above 5MB. Our checker accepts PDF and DOCX up to 5MB and flags any parse-rate risk immediately.

Can ATS read multi-column layouts, tables, or images?

Inconsistently — and that's exactly what kills good candidates. Most ATS read left-to-right, top-to-bottom in a single column. A 2-column resume often gets parsed as a jumbled stream where your job title ends up below a company name from a different role. Tables are often ignored or flattened, losing critical info. Images (including header/logo, icons next to skills) are never read — never put your contact info, name, or section headers in images. Our Design Style check flags every one of these risks specifically.

Should I tailor my resume to every job description?

Yes — but not by rewriting from scratch every time. The highest-ROI tailoring takes 5-10 minutes per application:

  1. Match your resume title to the job's title (or the closest variant).
  2. Make sure the JD's top 3-5 hard skills appear naturally in your resume, using the same phrasing.
  3. Mirror 1-2 soft skills the JD emphasizes with concrete examples.

Is my resume private? Do you share it or train AI on it?

No human on our team reads your resume, and we never share it with employers, recruiters, or third parties. Your file is encrypted in object storage (Cloudflare R2), tied to your account only, and never used to train AI models. We process resumes through third-party AI providers under contracts that prohibit training-data reuse. Retention: guest uploads 3 months, free accounts 6 months, paid accounts until you delete. You can delete any uploaded resume at any time.

Why does sign-in only accept Google accounts?

Two reasons:

  1. Google sign-in keeps abuse extremely low — no fake-account farms, no password-spray attacks — which is how we can keep the free tier genuinely free without rate-limiting honest users.
  2. It's the fastest path to your scan history — one click, no password setup, no email verification loop, no "forgot password" friction.

We're considering email sign-in for users without Google access in a future release; if that blocks you today, let us know.
